August Dragonfly

I took this in my backyard.  I have a small goldfish pond over taken this time of year by dragonflies.  The blue ones are usually here.  The brown and yellow dragonflies are found more along the edge of the woods.

Reflection

Here I am in the governor's conference room at the Georgia Capitol.  I was on a behind the scenes tour with an arts group -- we have work displayed in certain offices.

July Dragonfly

Last May during a severe storm we lost part of a large oak tree on the backside of our woods.  Sadie and Iris like to walk there now -- crunching through the pile of leaves from the fallen tree.  Dragonflies also like to hang around the leaves and branches.  This one caught my eye the other day -- so I took the dogs back to the house and got my camera.

Oldie but Goodie

Fooling around one day with a very old digital point and shoot and my daughter's microscope -- I took this photo of a goldfish still in the egg.  We have a backyard pond -- so this was scooped and shot and then quickly returned to the pond.

This one was already hatched.  The goldfish were of the fancy kind -- with spots.  Seeing the eyes on this one gives more perspective for the one in the egg above.

Chevron

Don't ask me why -- but I love this photo.  Yesterday I needed gas -- so as I got out of the car I grabbed the camera.  Just as I was wondering what there was to shoot while the gas was filling into the tank, I looked down and saw this.  Obviously this is a photo of nothing -- but the color and the geometrics of the composition are very appealing to me.

Peaches

Today -- on the way someplace else -- I stopped for a few minutes to wander in the peach orchard.  The peaches are big and just about ripe.

Iris

Lazy days of summer (almost).  Iris loves a late morning snooze on the dog quilt.

No Place Like Home

Yesterday I gathered a bunch of my photo club and we entered two teams in the first ever photo scavenger hunt at the Serenbe Photography Center.  It was hot and fun.  This photo was one I took during the outing.  Oh -- and pizza for lunch at The Hil was delicious!

Little Five Points

This is bad to admit -- but there are photos on my camera -- been there for days and I have not uploaded them yet.  For the weekly photo I check my archives and decided on this one.  It is one of my "Windows" series taken last summer in Little Five Points (Atlanta).

Better Late Than Never

I have been playing around with some of my nature shots -- not really photoshopping -- but using the image and creating a visual play with it.  The above photo is "Wonderland" and so far (well the one from yesterday is pretty good) this is a favorite.

Happy Easter

Grandmother Wood's pound cake recipe frosted with "best white icing."  Yum!  Lemon zest for a little color and fun.

New Leaves

The best part of spring for me is looking at all the new, fresh, juicy leaves popping out all over.  The oak has an interesting shape to the branch and leaf cluster.  It appears floral to me.

If you are in the Atlanta area any time the rest of this month -- check out our events at Nature Undisturbed.

Japanese Maple Spring

The Japanese Maple by the front porch is a great subject.  I have taken a lot of photos of it.  The first time it was mentioned on my regular blog was in the post "Snake and Eggs" almost three years ago.  A color version of this photo is going on the other blog today.

Spring

Last week it was springy -- windy and the trees are budding out.  This week it is not springy.  Oh well.   I took this shot in the wind -- I like the movement of the tree.

St. Patrick's Day

Last week I visited my favorite roadside cemetery -- and it just happened to be St. Patrick's Day.  While walking around looking at the carvings on the stones I spotted some shamrocks.

Someone wondered if the number seven was significant to this family -- since there are seven shamrocks on the stem.  That is an interesting question.

I really went to see the peach orchard behind the cemetery -- it was in bloom.  You can see orchard photos on my other blog.  This is the second time I wrote about the orchard on the blog.  I have also written about this cemetery before.

Pine

Every day when I walk into the back yard with the dogs I look up at the pine trees.  I really don't like pine trees.  To me, they are not good for much and just stand around, tall, waiting for lightning to strike.  At an old house we had three tall ones in the front yard.  This is when I liked pine trees.  One Sunday night, when my husband was out of town, there was a storm.  Lightning hit one of the trees near the house.  It traveled down the tree, across the sidewalk (cracking it and blowing dirt all over), went up the downspout, exploded the outside light, and fried anything in the house that was plugged in.  There was a huge scorch mark on the wall in the garage.

I like this photo.  I hate pine trees.

Southeastern Flower Show

Last Sunday I attended the Southeaster Flower Show at the Cobb Galleria.  They have a photography competition in connection with the show and I had a photo in that exhibit.  While there I walked around taking photos of the plants and flowers.  The display of orchids was pretty and I liked this photo for this week.

Shadow

I pass this building often and look at the shadow of the old tree.  The shadow and twisted branches is interesting to me -- especially on the background of the siding with the almost perfectly parallel lines.

Wolf Moon

Last week while out with the dogs I noticed the view of the full (or almost full) moon through the bare trees across the street.  Here is my version of February's Wolf Moon.

Closed

Recently on a trip in to Fayetteville I noticed there were no cars on the parking lot at a local barbecue joint.  It was before lunch and there was snow on the ground -- so I thought that could be it.  Then I noticed it the next day and say the "Closed" sign at the door.

I never had any barbecue from Melear's -- a lot of people did go there (which is why the empty parking lot caught my eye).  The building makes for nice photos.

Self

Some days you just get an idea and have to try it out.  I was thinking of a self in my powder room and hate taking the photo where I hold the camera out in front of me.  Then I was wanting something without the camera in front of my face -- so this is what I came up with.  I am considering new paint colors for the powder room.  The green has been there for a while -- so will it become brown (maybe too dark), grey, or pale blue?

Looking East

Some robins were perched high in this tree.  I saw them when I had the dogs out early one morning.  The sun was just coming up.  Interesting that they were in the tree -- all looking east to the morning sun.

January Moon

A couple nights ago the moon through the clouds and bare trees was very pretty.  It was a shame there was a bit of a breeze making it difficult to get crisp sharpness on the branches.  I like the way this one turned out and look forward to trying again the next night it looks tempting....

Atlanta Snow/Ice Storm

I am sure most everyone is tired of hearing how Atlanta is not equipped to deal with winter weather.  Believe me -- we are tired of it too.  The usual snow/ice removal plan in Atlanta is called, "well, tomorrow it will be in the 50s again and all this will be gone."  That did not happen this week and we were trapped for days due to ice and snow on the streets.

The photo above is a nighttime bokeh shot of my Japanese Maple by the front porch.

Now What?

I hate to just have this blog sit and nothing new appear -- so -- how about instead of another 365 (I don't know that I will ever do that again!) -- it is my favorite photo from the previous week?

So to start off -- this photo was taken January 7.  Iris and Sadie were napping on the bed (on their quilt) and I decided to play around with the wide angle.
